ABout Us

Rather than lounging around on the couch this spring break, we decided to help others! Eleven of us and two chaperons, went off to Orlando, Florida to volunteer at The Ronald McDonald House and Give Kids the World. We have created this website, so you can follow our journey as we strove to make the world a better place by helping kids who are less fortunate then ourselves.

TUESDAY

On the first full day of our Spring Break Service Learning Trip to Florida, we visited the whimsical resort of Give Kids the World. Give Kids the World provides children who qualify for the Make A Wish program an all expense paid, week long vacation at the resort. As well as being provided with food, medical care, and charming entertainment, the entire family is gifted five full day passes to any amusement park in Orlando, Florida. There, we, the Cambridge School students, worked as bus boys and girls, food runners, and general helpers in the dining area. After this enlightening experience, we went on a tour around the resort and learned about the incredible history of the resort. Following the tour, we headed off for lunch at Wawa. Finally, we proceeded home, went grocery shopping, and made dinner. We also baked a cake to celebrate Alexanda Pla’s seventeenth birthday. Overall, it was an amazing day that left us excited for the rest of our trip.

WEdnesday

Today, after breakfast we went to the Ronald McDonald House and made lunch for families who are staying there. We made tacos with onions and peppers. Another activity that we participated in was packing snacks for the families. While there, we were also given a tour of the facility. On the tour, we were told about a boy named Aidan who had cerebral palsy and stayed at the house for 8 months; he was well-loved by everyone at the Ronald McDonald House. In another room, there was a memorial picture from pulse night club where two of the men were killed in the horrific Orlando shooting. Afterwards volunteering and the tour, we went back to the house. Some of us took naps while others went to the playground, or club house.

Finally, we made dinner and went to volunteer at the Give Kids the World. At Give Kids the World, we helped run a special event called, “Village Idol”. It was a talent show where the guests could “preform” a talent of his/her choice. It was so much fun watching the kids preform! The night even ended with a surprise proposal between two of the veteran volunteers! What a day!

Thursday

On Thursday, we took a break from volunteering and went to Universal Studios. As a group, we went on The Mummy rollercoaster and had lunch at Mel’s Diner. The weather was perfect, sunny and cool. After Universal, we came back to the house for some down time. For dinner, we had a full meal of lemon chicken, broccoli and mac n’ cheese. For the remainder of the night, we will chill before having evening meeting. Tonight, we are going to have a good night sleep so we can wake up early to go to the Kennedy Space center and go to the beach before our final volunteering shift. We will keep you posted!

FRIDAY

Our final, full day in Florida was busy! We woke up early and had breakfast before driving to the Kennedy Space Center. Once we arrived at the space center, we were given time to explore in small groups. Some of us went on the bus tour, while others explored "Mission to Mars" and still others listened to the stories of a real astronaut. Overall, it was an awesome morning at NASA!

After some downtime and swimming at the house, we went to an early dinner at Buca di Beppo to celebrate Abby's 16th birthday! And finally, we ended our day with one final shift of volunteering at Give Kids the World! Half  of us were put to work in the kitchen while the other half helped run the "Once Upon a Village" pool party. It was so wonderful to see all the happy faces of the kids at the party!
